This is why the least protected homes are the most appealing to them.An inexperienced burglar might just run in and grab whatever they can and get out. Others are a little more calculating in their approach. They won't waste their time breaking in unless the reward is great.Their first objective is to get to the house undetected. This is why you won't see many burglaries take place in broad daylight. Houses which are well lit tend to discourage intruders, especially for areas with dark corners. Home Security - More on Burglary Prevention

Tip! ) Do a home security checkup. Put on your black hat and walk through your home, inside and out, with the eye of criminal.

In 2004 the Bureau of Justice reported that: -77% of all crime was property related -17% of all crime domiciles were violated by a burglar -85% of all burglaries the offender gained entry into the house or other building.

In the article "Home Security: Do It Yourself Home Security" we talked about ideas to prevent entry to your home. But the fact is that a determined burglar will get into your home. That is his job and let's face it, looking at the statistics, they are unfortunately good at it. Remember this: property crime occurs every 3 seconds, a home burglary every 15 seconds.

The home burglary that has received the most attention recently involved the theft of a laptop from a Veteran's Affairs analysts' home. The laptop reportedly had the personal data for 26.5 million veterans.

Three other tactics might be used to help prevent a burglary are home security alarms or burglar alarms, property marking and home security cameras.

Property marking is simply marking all your valuables with an identifying "signature" so they can readily be identified when recovered. Methods of marking include micro dots, laser pens, and ultraviolet pens. The key here is to have signage letting everyone know your property won't be so easy to sell on the black market because it is marked. Believe it or not most burglars do read and study their targets.

Tip! (c) 25% of American homes have a home security system; only one quarter of American homes are protected by a home security system, despite a recent survey showing the majority of homeowners believe that having a home security system is effective in deterring burglaries.

Home security cameras as part of a home security system are very effective in two respects. First as a deterrent. If a burglar sees that a property is covered with surveillance cameras they will have second thoughts in targeting that property. Second, if they are not that smart and decide to enter anyhow, a good surveillance system will capture the images of the perpetrator making it easier for the police to capture the bad guys. Home security cameras can be wired or wireless, real or dummy, indoor or outdoor, or any combination thereof.

Alarms can act as a successful deterrent. 90 % of police believe alarms deter burglary attempts. There are all kinds of alarms including expensive home security alarm systems monitored by ex-police officers. Silent, noisy, wired, wireless, door, window, motion, monitored, unmonitored-you name it and there is an alarm for it. Signage again is the key. Let burglars know they are in for a hard time ahead of time. The thing is alarms work.

Tip! A home safe is another valuable home security component. If for some reason thieves do manage to get past all of your security system defenses, a home safe can thwart all their efforts.

Alarms, surveillance cameras, and property marking are three more ways you can protect your home from burglary. Home security has become a huge business in the United States. With the advances in home security alarms, home security systems including wireless home security and home security cameras maybe, just maybe the bad guys will think twice before breaking into your home

If you think crime can only happen to the other guy you are wrong. The "other guy" is thinking the same thing and YOU are that "other guy". There is a reason why they call it self defense. You have to protect yourself.

A Step-by-Step Guide for Choosing a Home Security System

Tip! ) Do a home security checkup. Put on your black hat and walk through your home, inside and out, with the eye of criminal.

Two million American houses are burglarized according to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association. A majority of these houses have no alarm system to warn off the burglars or to notify the occupants or neighbors that a burglary is taking place. Installing security equipment - security hardware and software for your home provides a peace of mind and alerts and reacts to any unauthorized entry. Below are the basic steps to purchasing and installing a home alarm system:

1. Survey your home and decide how many of the doors and windows of the house will be included in the alarm system.

2. Talk to a security system adviser, an insurance agent, or a local police department for names of security companies.

3. Call up each of the companies and ask for an inspection by them as well as a recommendation and a price quote.

4. Depending on the reason for the security alarms and your family's normal lifestyle, pick the appropriate type, brand, and locations for sensors around the home.

5. A basic part of the security system to decide is the 24 hour monitoring system for an extra monthly fee. When there is an attempted robbery, a signal is automatically sent to security professionals that will contact the proper local police. A less expensive monitoring system will call pre-selected numbers for help when there is a break in.

Tip! (c) 25% of American homes have a home security system; only one quarter of American homes are protected by a home security system, despite a recent survey showing the majority of homeowners believe that having a home security system is effective in deterring burglaries.

6. Make sure all the zones can be controlled with one control panel. A zone is any window or door that is incorporated into the security system. The basic system can only control eight zones but it can be upgraded to control up to thirty two. These systems usually range around $350-400. Pick where the control panel will be placed as well as any other keypads throughout the house. The keypads in most houses are placed at the front door and in the bedroom, allowing certain components to be turned on or off while the control panel manages the entire system.

Tip! True or False: If there is any metal construction in a home, a wireless home security system won't work.

7. When looking for a home automation system, make sure that they connect to lighting, smoke, carbon monoxide, and flood sensors. A problem that quite a few systems have is that during the winter their switches freeze so consult an authority for its practicality during the winter.

8. Once the system is installed, the code should be easy to remember by everyone in the family and should be kept private under most circumstances. Make sure the keypad is user friendly and can activate and deactivate alarms in seconds.

9. There are many advantages to choosing wireless burglar alarms. One of the main ones is that there is no reason to drill too many holes in the wall. And if a retrofit comes into the scenario, having a wireless system becomes a huge convenience.

General Tips: 1. Check that the system has a backup battery power. 2. Ask about maintenance tests, how does them, and how often. 3. Choose the monitoring service before buying the system because the type of system limits what type of service you will receive.

Tip! True or False: Most insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who have a home security alarm.
